    Anai Saenz

    Anai @ Starbright Preschool

My experience as a volunteer for Starbright Preschool's Fall Yard and Building Clean-up event was truly worthwhile. Some of my duties included cleaning children play areas, staining wood benches, and washing miscellaneous items. The goal was to restore this preschools backyard into a cleaner and newer state for the children to safely play in. I had an enjoyable time at this event and I met many new and kind people. Overall, it was a great experience and I would definitely volunteer at this location again!

    Project 2016: McBee Elementary School

Volunteering for The Project is always a delightful and highly active experience! This year I had the opportunity to take part in the painting and remodeling of Harmony School of Excellence, which is a public school that focuses on the areas of STEM. Among the various tasks I performed I was able to help paint a room that serves as a dining hall, set-up newly built benches around the campus, and build several plant beds. Many of the things my team of people and I renovated had been in a declining state when we arrived. It was evident that help was needed which made our mission all the more important. When we completed our goals, I felt so accomplished. I know the difference we made will have significance in the eyes of the students, faculty, and staff at Harmony. I truly hope it benefits them and I hope to be able to continue assisting areas in need.

Fall 2015 Concho Garden Volunteer Day - TUESDAYS

Volunteering at the garden was a great experience because I was working with nature which I happen to love. Tending to plants was genuinely satisfying which is why I plan to attend these events more often.

    Univision Noche Navideña

Volunteering at this event was a lively experience which I truly enjoyed. Initially, I worked in the parking area: guiding people to the designated parking, answering questions, and more. I had the chance to use my bilingual skills because most people I assisted spoke only Spanish. The people attending the event were extremely kind and humble as well as the people hosting the event. For this reason, I decided to stay and help during the final volunteer shift. This is when we helped put everything from chairs, tables, table cloths, and food away. The environment was welcoming and the families enjoying this event seemed very happy. Overall, this volunteering experience was one to remember because I had the chance to help a community of people that reminded me of my own community back home.

I participated in an event called Longhorn Lights Out. I was part of one of the many teams of 5-6 people that went around campus on a Friday afternoon, turning off lights and disconnecting electronics that were not in use. My group's mission was initially to focus on one building but because we finished ahead of time we volunteered to work on another building. Overall, we were responsible for shutting off all the lights at the GEB Building and at the Welch Building. Being a part of this event, made me realize how large the use of electricity is here on campus. It was also very surprising to see that many unused rooms had their lights on, their projectors on, and many other electronics still plugged in and on power mode. However, I really appreciated getting to volunteer at this event because I had the chance to make a small difference in energy conservation. I have always been a huge supporter or reusing, reducing, and recycling which is why I signed up for Longhorn Lights Out in the first place. I can proudly say I shut off a lot of unused power sources and I even left notes on desks, chalkboards, under light switches and on walls, asking that people turn off the lights and electronics before exiting the rooms.

The service volunteering I performed took place at the Blanton Museum of Art. I was one of the 150 UT students volunteering for two very important events called "Off The Wall" and "Art on the Edge". They were an art gala honoring the our university's president, Bill Powers and a fancy museum after party. The individuals who attended were people who donated money to the Blanton Museum, and in turn the museum thanked them with a lovely gala and a celebration afterwards. Throughout the events I served in different tasks like answering questions, leading guests inside the museum, overseeing certain areas of the museum, greeting guests, etc... I had the opportunity to speak to a few of the museum's donors, many of whom were UT alumni. This was such an eye-opening and honoring experience because I received much advice and encouragement from those I spoke to. In fact some of them told me about their own college experiences and asked me about mine. Furthermore, I was able to put into practice my etiquette and my professional skills. Overall, this volunteering was extremely gratifying!

Trail of Lights Fun Run presented by Humana

I was able to put my social skills to use at this packet pick-up event for the Trail of Lights Fun Run. My job was to greet people and point them in the appropriate location to get their supplies for the 2 mile run that afternoon. I also answered basic questions about parking and starting time. Mostly I just enjoyed being able to volunteer for a position that simply required me to smile, be kind, informative, and helpful. In addition, I got to see the Trail of Lights before it opened, as all the food stands and stages were being set up. Overall, it was a fun experience!

At this Saturday volunteering service I assisted at a DACA clinic. DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and this event was meant to allow for undocumented students to apply for deferred action. My role at this clinic was to act as a translator. I used my bilingual skills to translate Spanish birth certificates into English copies that the people needed in order to apply. I used birth certificate templates and typed out Spanish birth certificates from many different Mexican cities into English copies. Being a part of this volunteer event, I was able to put my bilingual skills to use for a greater cause. I felt an immense gratification knowing that I was part of a team aiding these undocumented students on their struggle to stay in the U.S. and continue their education.
